Welcome to Free Range Schoolhouse
Free Range Schoolhouse, an independent organization, provides educational services to homeschool students and their families in the greater Memphis area. We offer weekly courses approximately equivalent to introductory-level college classes in a variety of subjects that are important to homeschoolers, universities, and the longstanding history of education in the Western tradition.
Our experienced and knowledgeable educators, all of whom have a background in homeschooling, a doctoral degree, and a history of teaching college classes, can prepare homeschool students for a university-level education and teach them the knowledge and skills that they need to develop into both good students and upstanding members of Western civilization.
You can learn more about Free Range Schoolhouse, our educators, and the classes we offer from the links below and at the top of the page. If you’re ready to register for classes, you can do so here.
Our Mission
Free Range Schoolhouse was founded by Dr. Andrew Diener and Dr. D.J. Hobbs to provide homeschool students with a convenient, affordable, and quality education outside the state-run school system. Our responsibility is solely to our students and their families. While we teach our classes in a rigorous and challenging manner to help our students learn, the grades we assign are given only to our students’ parents. With their years of experience teaching university-level courses and their love for teaching, our educators are ready to help homeschool students learn the subject knowledge they need to succeed and to assist them with preparing for college.
Classes at Free Range Schoolhouse
Our courses are taught once per week over the course of a typical academic semester. These classes are intended for advanced homeschoolers in the 9th-12th grades and are taught at the approximate level of introductory college courses. They feature the same sorts of homework, tests, and other assignments that students will encounter in a university education. We offer wide variety of subjects that can be useful to homeschooling families both in meeting current educational requirements and in preparing students for their future studies. Subjects we teach include English, Foreign Languages (currently only German), Mathematics, Philosophy, Science (introductory-level Biology, Chemistry, and Physics, without labs), and Western Civilization (equivalent to many History courses). Class sizes typically range from 8 to 16 students each, which compares highly favorably to most introductory college class sizes.
Course Fees
In general, the fee for each student per weekly class session is $30. For a typical 15-week semester, that means that a full class for a single student costs $450. However, Free Range Schoolhouse is proud to offer discounts for homeschool families looking to purchase multiple classes during a single semester. See here for further details.
