What is Philosophy?

Philosophy, literally meaning the love of wisdom, is one of the world’s oldest areas of study. Philosophers stand for the unwavering pursuit of the truth, and Philosophy seeks to answer questions regarding the nature of the human being, the way to live a virtuous life, the world in which we live, and the rules governing logical reasoning and argumentation. Philosophy has been a critical component of Western civilization since the days of ancient Greek philosophers like Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle, and it has continued to influence history more recently through figures such as Saint Thomas Aquinas, René Descartes, and John Locke, among others. By studying and discussing Philosophy, students can expect to learn about many of the ideas that have shaped the world in which we live and to develop their ability to exercise a fundamental human capability: reason.
