What is Free Range Schoolhouse?
Educators
Free Range Schoolhouse was founded in 2022 by two teachers, Dr. Andrew Diener and Dr. D.J. Hobbs, who saw the growing need of homeschool students for a solid education that could prepare them to attend university without subjecting them to the modern compulsory school system. See the links below for more detailed biographies of our educators.
Like the one-room schoolhouses from which it takes its name, the purpose of Free Range Schoolhouse is to serve the Memphis-area homeschool community by providing a place where students can receive an education that teaches them the basic knowledge that they need to know to be upstanding members of society, where they can interact with educators and peers without separating them from their families for the entire school day, and where they can improve their learning and thinking skills without being indoctrinated by the contemporary school system. At our location in Bartlett, we offer semester-long, once-per-week classes to homeschool students throughout the greater Memphis area. These classes are taught approximately at the level of introductory undergraduate courses at a university, and they are appropriate for dedicated and diligent students in grades 9—12 (especially for students in grades 11—12). By taking courses at Free Range Schoolhouse, homeschool students can both learn important subject knowledge in fields ranging from English to Mathematics to Western Civilization and prepare themselves to adapt to the environment of the classes that they may soon take as college students.
Free Range Schoolhouse is not affiliated with any official school system or larger organization. While our educators do assign grades to students, these grades are reported only to the parents. We believe that it is the right of homeschool families to make such decisions for themselves. Our role at Free Range Schoolhouse is to teach what we know and to prepare homeschool students for university classes, not to control every aspect of their education. Since a good homeschool education requires the involvement of the whole family as well as good teachers, we work closely with parents to ensure that your children are receiving the sort of education of which you would approve — parents are welcome to sit in on our classes at any time.
