Western Civilization

The term Western Civilization, also known as the Occidental World, refers to the history, culture, and traditions of Europe and the lands to which European culture has spread, such what is now the United States of America. Beginning with ancient Greece, the study of Western Civilization extends towards the Roman Republic and Empire, through medieval Europe, and to the modern day. Our courses in Western Civilization encompass nearly the entirety of this timeline, from the ancient world until approximately 1918 (the conclusion of the first World War). These courses focus primarily on the history of Western Civilization during various periods of development and are largely equivalent to many introductory-level university History courses. However, they also take into account some of the languages, cultures, and art that have emerged throughout the Western tradition. In these courses, students can both learn where many aspects of our contemporary society originated and develop their own ability to comprehend and appreciate the longstanding Western tradition.
