English Language and Literature
The English language is the most widely spoken language worldwide, and it has been used to produce some of the greatest prose and poetry throughout the history of Western civilization. There are many purposes for studying English in an academic context. First, a firm grasp of the English language enables students to communicate their ideas to a wide audience in a clear, intelligible, and eloquent manner. No matter what career the individual intends to enter, the ability to convey meaning using comprehensible and persuasive language is a necessary skill. Second, the words and ideas that have been passed down to us over the centuries from authors writing in English have shaped the world in which we live in a myriad of ways. By studying, discussing, and writing about texts from all time periods of English literature, students can both improve their own linguistic abilities and learn about the vast impact that the written word has had on our history. Courses in English include both literary studies and classes intended to help students develop their own writing skills.
