Intermediate German
Course Description: This course is intended to assist students in increasing their familiarity and ability with the German language. The aim of the course is for students to be able to communicate and comprehend more complex information in both spoken and written German. In pursuit of this goal, students will become acquainted with more complex rules of German grammar, strengthen their German vocabulary, practice translating written text from both German to English and from English to German, and refine their ability to speak and understand German in the classroom. This course asks students to complete a variety of exercises, readings, and interactions both inside and outside the classroom to improve their ability and comfort level with German words, phrases, sentences, paragraphs, and short conversations. The course grade is based primarily on in-class participation, weekly vocabulary and grammar homework, and brief quizzes and examinations.
Course Objectives: By the end of the course,
The student will be familiar with the fundamental grammar of the German language.
The student will be able to identify and translate a list of fundamental vocabulary words that are necessary for increasing their facility with both written and spoken German.
The student will be able to translate more complex passages from German into English and from English into German.
The student will be able to communicate and comprehend everyday information in both spoken and written German, as assessed through in-class discussions and course quizzes/examinations.
Prerequisites: Elementary German
This course is typically offered in the Spring semester and is co-taught by Dr. Diener and Dr. Hobbs.
